Computer Upgrade Help!

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

Hey guys, university student here, just landed a big scholarship, so I want to treat myself to an upgrade or a rebuild. First off, despite the scholarship, I want to save as much as possible. However, that is secondary. My primary objective is to run CPU-intensive games at 40-50 fps. (Games like DCS World, Prepar3d, iRacing, etc) Main reason is because I'll invest in an Oculus sometime soon, and I've heard that low fps can make you sick.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

I already have a Dell XPS 8500 that I bought a long time ago, and I don't know if I was doing something wrong, but a 3.4Ghz cpu was struggling to get 20-30 fps in DCS with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 1GB card. Quick component list of the XPS8500: i7 3770(k?) @ 3.4Ghz 16 GB DDR3 ram <---looking to reuse this, if possible NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 1GB

Budget of new parts ideally would be <$750, but I'm willing to go over if reasonably important.

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

New computer, new problems.

I pretty much had everything working fine on my last computer, but it was weak. I couldn't handle Rift demos not being at their best so I put together a new computer. Harder, better, faster and stronger it can handle anything I throw at it. Yet when I try some Rift Demos things aren't quite right. The demo scene of the Config tool has a visibly small FOV. And Dreadhalls barely runs at all, with incredible latency and low input response. Most, if not all, game wont even launch in Direct to Rift mode. I use Windows 7 and have a EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanksgiving Day Stream - Zelda ALttP in VR

Often I end up playing a Zelda game on Thanksgiving and Christmas for whatever reason. To the point that it kind of feels like a tradition for me now. This year I figured I would try streaming because I can do something a little different. Play Zelda in VR!

I'm working on a Unity project that mirrors your desktop onto a virtual screen in a Unity scene. And now seems like a good opportunity to show it off! - Screenshots

The plan is to play Zelda A Link to the Past on the virtual screen, and see how far I can get in the 1 sitting. I'll be streaming it on my twitch channel. And I should be joined by apieceoffruit from Team METATRON and the Left Handed VR Podcast, to help make it more interesting. We may even add some others into the conversation at some point.

This will be a nice fun casual stream. So if you don't have much going on for the holiday, don't celebrate it, just like Zelda, are interested in my project, want to ask me or apieceoffruit some questions, or whatever, just come on by and hang out. =)

Been telling this story for the past week and a few of my friends told me its probably the funniest thing they've ever heard

So my good friend told me this story about his younger brother- We'll call his brother Mark. Well Mark was in high school and was waking up in the morning to get ready for school one day. You remember how it was, you're all bleary-eyed and tired as shit and trying to snooze as much as you can. Well he had snoozed to long and woke up running super-late. In his frenzy he just threw on whatever clothes were lying next to the bed and rushed off to catch the school bus. A few periods into the day he was getting hot so he unzipped his hoodie and jizz shirt. That's right he was wearing the shirt that he kept beside his bed to cum onto at the end of his nightly fapping routine. Fuck! Fucking jizz shirt. So disgusting was this shirt it was COVERED in life juice and the way he describes it as being all crusty and wrinkled together and shit just makes for a hilarious visual. Jizz shirt.

[Build Help] Upgrading PC, or possibly building a new one! Help wanted!

Hey guys, university student here, just landed a big scholarship, so I want to treat myself to an upgrade or a rebuild.

First off, despite the scholarship, I want to save as much as possible. However, that is secondary. My primary objective is to run CPU-intensive games at 40-50 fps. (Games like DCS World, Prepar3d, iRacing, etc) Main reason is because I'll invest in an Oculus sometime soon, and I've heard that low fps can make you sick.

Continuing on the saving money part, I already have a Dell XPS 8500 that I bought a long time ago, and I don't know if I was doing something wrong, but a 3.4Ghz cpu was struggling to get 20-30 fps in DCS with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 1GB card. Quick component list of the XPS8500:

i7 3770(k?) @ 3.4Ghz 16 GB DDR3 ram <---looking to reuse this, if possible NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 1GB

I have all the peripherals, such as keyboard, mouse, screen, etc so mainly looking for a parts list that would help max out these games since they are rather FPS-sensitive. Budget of new parts ideally would be <$750, but I'm willing to go over if reasonably important.

How Good Will Oculus Graphics Be?

I am home over thanksgiving playing with Google cardboard and my niece (5 years old) is addicted to the thing.

Its pretty neat.

However, the graphics are of course a bit crude yet.

What are the oculus's graphics like? Are they basically the same as the Google cardboard? At one point will it get as good as like a Playstation 4?

Will VR turn us into actors within game worlds?

I've been playing Dragon Age: Inquisition for the last few days and am loving it. I definitely see the potential for a game like it in VR and it brought up the idea of VR enabling us to be "actors" within directed video game stories in hopefully the near future.

What with voice search working in phones, tablets and PCs, I started wondering if something like that tech could be implemented for VR RPG games. For instance, if you're in a conversation with a character(all in first-person, mind you) then maybe ghostly text would appear around the person you're talking to which would replace the current conversation wheel we click on now.

Like digital cue cards or karaoke lyrics, you would read off the text aloud and then you'd get the intended response from the NPC. This would bring an added bit of realism into the experience, adding voice with vision and full-body controls(via front-facing cameras like Leap or Nimble for hands and arms and ODTs like the Virtuix Omni for the legs).

Effectively, this would allow us to, in a game, walk around, use our hands to "physically" interact with the world, walk or simulated locomotion as well as using speech for verbal interactions.

The thought of this level of immersion would give us a much deeper investment in stories as we would feel we're one of the actors within it and not just clicking on prompts.

Do you think that verbal interaction via microphones could add speech to the list of things necessary for greater immersion within VR experiences?

The Gecko Systems GS-105. A $2000 Motion Simulator that can be used with a computer desk.

I found this 2dof Simulator when i was researching potentially building my own diy simulator. I saw a few ideas that would probably be cheaper then this, but the difficulty is fairly high. It is cheaper and more accessible then other already built solutions and looks to offer more precise reactions to many current simulators including the NoLimit2. This looks like it would be a great addition to the Oculus Rift. I would love to see cheaper alternatives.

Favorite unscripted moment (no spoilers)

Do you have a favorite unscripted moment from DAI? Something that wasn't a story moment, banter, dialogue, romance, etc.?

I was still early in the game when I beat a group of templars in a tough fight. In this fight, I knocked a guy off a cliff for the first time (awesome) and used jar of bees for the first time (the best inventory item of all time?). I had maybe 75% of my potions left, and continued on to another tough fight that knocked me down to maybe half my potions remaining.

Afterwards, I decided to try and scale a relatively sheer cliff to reach a nearby oculus before heading back to camp. While I tried (and failed) to make it up, I was attacked by bandits. In the middle of that fight, a bear (my first) came out of nowhere and attacked both sides. After that fight, I was down to maybe 1/3 of my remaining potions, but I was so close to that damn oculus! So I found the proper path up the mountain.

On the way up, a bear came charging down towards my group - but it was chasing wildlife, so I let it go. I finally reached the oculus at the top of the cliff, but the instant before I started to use it some enemy lurkers appeared out of nowhere and did some serious damage. Now down to almost no healing/regen potions, I was finishing up the fight when...that freaking bear came back and decided to take us all on. I spent my last everything beating the bear, and finally - finally, finally - got to the stupid oculus.

That was the moment when I knew I was in love with this game - the mix of fun fights, the random encounters that seriously upgraded some low-level battles into crazy free-for-alls, the way eliminating healing spells/fully healing out of combat made me strategically consider every move. And that's WITHOUT taking into consideration the traditionally excellent BioWare storytelling, characters, and lore.

Setting up my rift this weekend.

Hey guys, newbie here. My rift will be here tomorrow and I'm hoping to be up and running over the weekend. I have already downloaded all the popular demos.

At first I was going to use 4.2 after reading all the problems with the initial release of 4.3. Is 4.3 ironed out enough to use now? I know I need to keep arrow on with 4.3. being new to this I just don't want to drive myself nuts with simple incompatible issues.

I guess to sum things up is if I install runtime 4.3 what are some of the demos that are known not to work under 4.3? This will save me some aggravation while I'm learning the ropes here.

P. S. After trying all the demo's my main purpose is going to be pretty much assetto corsa, iracing, no limits 2, and elite dangerous on my motion simulator.

[Build Ready] Thoughts on build

This is the PC I am currently planning on building next week. Prices are silly because I live in Australia :( I am building this PC primarily as a gaming rig to run 1440p games and in preparation for Oculus Rift, hoping to get into some development with a friends DK2. I am not planning to overclock straight away as this is my first PC build which is why I did not include a CPU cooler. Should I do it?

I have been thinking about getting a PC for gaming mostly for oculus rift. The full version isn't out yet and a lot of people are saying to wait, but there's no telling how far in the future that will be. Also I've never built a PC before and I have no idea about the technical terms, my post and build a PC keeps getting buried.

But what I'm asking you guys is should I go ahead and pull the trigger on a decently good gaming PC they can run rift

Or should I hold my breath until the CV1 comes out?

My budget is around $800-$1000 for the PC. No including oculus.

What you people think?

If it gives you any more emotion I currently have an Xbox one, which is great really, but it's two types of gaming in my mind. One is pick up and play casual while the PC is where its at to get really immersed especially with virtual reality

Besides I can't imagine playing Fifa on a PC

Unity 5b or Ureal 4 for Gear VR development?

Although both engines are great and ultimately all depends on the developers skill to make a compelling experience, this is more of a technical post.

Oculus provided guidelines regarding the limits of polygons, vertex, draw calls etc..

Question, who are planning to develop for Gear VR and what engine?

I am aware that Epic intends to make UE 4 integration for mobile. Other than that I don't know much about it. Can the same graphical performance be push on both Unity 5b and Unreal with the same hardware limits? I am relatively new to game dev, so any input would be great.

Janus VR 30.2 crash - possible solution

Hi all,

I tried for about two hours to made Janus VR working, and found a strange, but somehow working solution.

Basic problem:

When i started Janus, with RIFT TURNED OFF, it started without any problem (and showed 2D version). But when I tried to start it with rift turned ON, (in extended mode) it crashed without any error or anything. Tried turning off programs, reinstalled oculus drivers, turned of FXAA in Nvidia Control panel. No luck.

Then I tried in direct to rift mode, Janus started, but showed the screen on my "normal" monitor.

So, the solution:

Started the Janus with Direct To Rift - then opened up the rift control panel, changed back to extended mode, and moved the game screen to the rift screen. Works like a charm. No crash so far, and it was FANTASTIC! :D

Maybe someone else can make it to work :)
