Any work arounds for key binding bugs in galaxy/system maps?

So, these bugs seem to be hitting me hard for some reason. Getting a fix before the weekend is looking increasingly unlikely. Anyone know of reliable work arounds for these?

Throttle and lateral thruster binds do not work after using the galaxy map. If I go into the options screen and exit again, the throttle is fixed. But the thrusters one is a bear. I have to exit the game (not just to the main menu) to fix this one. This happens to me almost every time I use the galaxy map.

UPDATE: One person has suggested to hit the UI focus button to clear this problem. I've not tried it yet, but it makes sense since I seem to only really encounter this when using Oculus. I have no need for the UI focus button in oculus!

Cannot exit the system map. This one is more rare. But sometimes none of the "back" keys nor the "exit" UI button work on the system map. I'm stuck there. I have to exit to main menu and re-join the game.

Help with this Oculus rift rendering bug ?

I loaded up my game today and realized pretty quickly there was some kind of artifact going on. I thought that is was some sort of screen artifact at first but then I captured this on the render window for the demo scene. Is anyone else having this problem?

[Build Help] Smallest Oculus Rift development rig, preferably LGA2011-3?

Like the title says: I would like a very compact system suitable for some level of portability.

Required:

• Full-length, double-width video card (probably. GeForce GTX 970)


• Suitable cooling for CPU + GPU

Preferred:

• Socket LGA2011-3 support; aiming for either i7-5960X or i7-5930K


• Relatively quiet

The trouble seems to be in motherboard support... apparently there are no Micro ITX LGA2011-3 motherboards.

Discussion: Elite:Dangerous, Direct Mode, and you!

I know this has been discussed in the past, but I wanted to open a dialogue on E:D's direct mode issues. The number one issue I'm experiencing is a strange double vision bug that occurs during head movement. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can shed some light on the issue. I think it is either some SLI implementation issues, or a failure to initiate low persistence. Extended mode works fine, but the headtracking in direct mode is so so nice. How do we fix?

Concerns about my PC

So I purchased my Rift a few months ago, with plans to upgrade my PC, unfortunately my car has started falling apart, and i need that more at the moment.

Since my Rift will be in soon, I was wondering if you guys think I would be able to get by using my PC in its current state.

anyone still getting judder with DK2 and Beta 3 ?

Hi,

since beta 3 I experience more judder in stations and black smearing as well. I use the latest oculus sdk 0.4.3. Before beta 3 and sdk 0.4.2 it was better for me. My system is GTX 980, win 7, driver 344.48, i7 4790, 8 Go ram.

Any tips to improve the game experience ?

Hellicott City -- Haunted Wagon Ride

Greetings,

I spent the past month diving into my first VR project for a local "unusual" art show. I created a haunted-hayride-like experience through a fictional representation of the town. This being my first venture into VR development, my goals were to not make people sick, wrap my brain around the unique aspects/constraints of VR development, and maybe get a few cheap scares out of it.

I demoed last night for 5+ hours and received a great response from first-timers and VR-veterans alike. Of course, the environment is a representation of the actual town, so it would have more charm to anyone who's been there and might be a bit silly for those who haven't. I will continue to update this post and put the game on Share and Oculus forums (unable to successfully post), but I wanted to share here ASAP in case anyone wants to try it on Halloween. Would love to get some feedback if you try it!

Disclaimer: It's not terrifying, but use your discretion before letting a child ride this one. No children were at the art show last night, but if a child wanted to try it, I would have asked their guardian to try it first to judge whether it will scare the crap out of them. I don't want to cause any trauma and I imagine this technology has a pretty strong impact on a kid's mind.

When one Lafayette bride-to-be said “I do” she had no idea the date chosen for her most special day would fall on the exact same day as the LSU-Bama game. Her wedding date was set back in early December, and after changing the date three times, November 8, 2014 was the only date where everything (church, hall, photographer, etc.) was available. The couple—who both also work every other weekend—was so pressed on finding a date that worked, they never even had a chance to consider looking up local sports schedules. Where do the Oculus Connect's Demographics come from?

I was looking at pictures of the crowds at Oculus Connect, and trying to figure why it's almost entirely Caucasian males.

Take this as a representative sample of the pictures I've seen:

I count:

1 Asian male,

1 Black male,

2 Caucasian females,

16 Caucasian males

The spread is similar for other pictures I've seen of the event.

I don't think the American population is 90% Caucasian. Is the American population of CS/entertainment professionals 90% Caucasian? Was the conference attended mostly by Californians, and ~90% of Californian CS/entertainment professionals are Caucasian?

VR is a more-or-less new field. The attendees didn't disclose their ethnicity to apply to the conference. The attendees independently self-selected by applying to the conference. So I would think there would be roughly the same proportion of Caucasians at the conference as in the population of CS/entertainment professionals.

I went to school for CS, so I'm familiar with gender imbalances in the field. But is it a 90/10 split? I didn't think it was that severe, particularly in California.

VR is pretty new. It has comparatively low barriers to entry (PC + maybe a DK?). Why is its community skewed toward Caucasian men? Is there some sort of cultural identity among them that encourages them to be early adopters of electronic peripherals?

DK2 vs. Pacemaker

I recently received my DK2, and while carefully studying the manual on the toilet I came across this warning: "The headset can emit radio waves that can affect the operation of nearby electronics, including cardiac pacemakers." Returning after a year long break

As the title says, I'm coming back after a really long break. Most of what I know is still here but I'm finding it difficult to gear my Reaper. I'm not entirely sure of what I should be doing overall. I did BT and got a full set of Oculus, I've been running Lakan's and Abscess for jewelry and I got a brooch, and I'm doing Nexus as often as I can for a quick belt. Gonna start WHHM soon but after that, what do I do?

re Alien Isolation VR experience for my brother

Hi there I just wanted to update a couple of you on how my trip went for my brother. I put a post up a week or so ago saying how Alien Isolation was an incredible experience and how my brother had been a long term Aliens fan and how he was interested in seeing it.

My brothers had depression all his life, hes struggled in work getting bullied out of his last job to the point of being unable to work since. The psychological effects of bullying coupled with low self esteem and depression can be pretty dramatic unfortunately. Hes been on and off medication most of his life and coupled with alcohol addiction and smoking (sometimes weed) this has all had quite a negative effect on his health.

To top it off a few years ago his wife of 16 years killed herself after he spent a couple of days at mums following an argument, that led to regular attempts at his own life right up until this year. Not painting a glamorous picture here sorry for that. This part is only relevant to a couple of posters who wished him well, I just wanted to point out how bad things had gotten for him.

Anyway I had showed him the DK1 a year or so ago and he was real excited about seeing Alien Isolation in the DK2. I drove down the 300 odd miles on Saturday and soon had it all setup for him. The previous night I had got back in from working all day and powered through from mission 4 to mission 9 just so my brother could re-live the scene from the original Alien movie where they discover the Derelict.

I plugged him in and off he went, he spent ages just gawking around him and it took a while for him to work out the hand held tracking device. That was a bit frustrating because for a regular gamer like me it couldn't have been simpler lol He was soon approaching the Derelict and a he said something like 'Err ok im...Ahhhh there it is yes' when he got to the scene where it is revealed in the distance.

It took him ages to actually get inside it, he was spending like 5 minutes at a time examining the surface of the walls on the outside lol he was saying 'wow I never imagined id be standing here'. It really is that feeling btw to anyone who hasn't seen it yet, its like you really are on the set of the movie.

I pretty much left him too it after that, he went in and explored and finally came out at the finale, which I wont spoil for anyone who hasn't played that mission yet.

He was amazed by it, he said it was such a strange experience being there at that place, the devs had done a stellar job that's for sure. The whole trip was a fantastic experience for him, interestingly probably the highlight of the whole trip (apart from smashing my mum at scrabble 543 points haha) was us three all going for a walk with my sisters dog across the fields.

He did enjoy it though and I think I went down just at the right time to pick him up, hes really looking forward to an exploration game, he kept asking - is there somewhere I can just go off and explore, you know across mountains etc? I told him Skyrim is like that, but without official support there really isn't at the moment is there? Nothing yet. Heres hoping for World of Warcraft: Revisited or something in VR right from the start with updated graphics and FPS mode lol :)

VR has given him something to look forward to in the future, its not quite there yet and im looking forward to it too. Its a great feeling because you know its only going to get better, and better, and better! The future is bright and I cant wait for it, the DK2 has given so many people such sweet glimpses into the potential of VR (including the students iv shown it off to in school), it has the ability to transform all our lives for the better and im so grateful to everyone at Oculus for making our dreams finally, a reality.

TLDR - My brother loved the experience and is really looking forward to consumer VR now, we both are.

PS; if anyone has completed the game and can provide me with the save file I would appreciate that, I have very little free time and im only really interested in the EVA spacewalk now which I think is mission 16. I wont have time to complete the game but wouldn't mind seeing that part in VR. The wife went nuts at me on that Friday night because she hadn't seen me all week and I spent that evening getting to mission 9 and left early the next morning lol I wont spend any longer than I have to now away from her this holiday :)

Just got my DK2, orange light, and it's making my system lag to hell

So, just got my DK2 today, gone through setting it up, and all was good up until launching the test demo in the config util, where I still have an orange light and apparently no video signal is getting through.

Not only that, but after being connected for a little while, my system started to lag. So I checked resource manager, and an entire core is being taken up by system interrupts alone (assuming this is the rift's gyro or positional tracking camera?). If I go to restart the comp without disconnecting the DK2 or pausing the service etc then when windows finishes closing background stuff and goes to restart, it completely locks up and freezes, presumably cuz the interrupts are now taking up the rest of the CPU time now that windows isn't using it for anything else.

I've reinstalled the firmware, made sure the rift is connected to a USB 2.0 port, checked the HDMI connection, everything I can think of, still can't get any video on the rift screen. Any ideas?

System Specs:

• MB: ASRock Z77 Extreme4


• CPU: i5 3570k (Not overclocked)


• GPU: Gigabyte GTX 660 2GB


• RAM: 8GB


• OS: Win7 x64 Home Premium


• Monitor setup, because it might be relevant:

Two 1080p monitors, one connected via DVI-D, another on DVI-I -> VGA via adapter as the one monitor only has a VGA port. GPU still has a HDMI port spare.

Using Kinect 2 and Rift?

I was wondering if anyone's had any luck playing with the new Kinect 2 for Windows and the Rift? The two items seem destined for each other, they provide have the potential to provide full "IN/OUT" to the digital world.

I am guessing a bunch of Kinect 2 application will come out, but it's still pretty early in the game. I also question the use of hand and body detectors (leap motion, razer hydra, etc) since these would easily be supported with Kinect.

I've recently started playing with Unity and noticed that they seem to support Kinect 2. I may start to dabble with it soon.

So, did I miss any secret Rift/Kinect apps or project out there? Anyone have working prototypes?

Head mounted Hands upside down? why?- Unity Free + most current updates for oculus + leap (mac)

So I'm fairly sure I have everything setup correctly. The leap works correctly in unity without head tracking mode selected.

when i try to put the hand controller into head tracking mode, my hands appear upside down, and often confuses the left and the right. here is a pic of whats happening

all this and now to mention my oculus issues...

the oculus works sometimes... sometimes i get Screen position out of view frustum... i have no idea what that means..

also when I put the hand controller into a scene in unity i get some DLL errors and the oculus stops working :/

it can sometimes go away when i move things around... i know this doesn't make much sense

also when the hand controller and the oculus camera are in the scene together I get a Null reference exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

gosh i hope someone can help, this sure is frustrating. i've been reading that 0.4.3 has issues.... should I try using 0.4.2? does the free oculus plugin work with 0.4.3?

$700 - $800 Mid-range Gaming PC

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

• Mostly gaming. On my list now are the Elder Scrolls games (Just got the Elder Scrolls Anthology and would like the mod the hell out of Skyrim with hopefully insane graphics), and steam games in general, but would like to have the option to play most games. Also looking to get an Oculus Rift when it is released. Other than that I toy around with Arduino stuffs but that doesn't require much of anything.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

• I can go as high as $1000, but I'm aiming for the $700 -$800 (preferably even below as I don't believe I need anything super hardcore)

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

• What's holding me back is lack of product knowledge, so if I have info on the right parts it can be any day.

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

• I already have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, but will need everything else.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

Purchased a DK2 and waiting for status! Suggestions of anything I should download to be ready to hit the ground running the moment it is delivered?

Since waiting for the shipping/delivery status is getting me antsy enough, I wouldn't want to download everything I need when I receive the package, so I'd like to download every software, games, developer took,...etc that is recommended for the DK2 that I definitely will need to check out.

I have been using this for about 6 days now and have well over 30 hours in wearing it- figured it was time to share the making/impressions.

Prologue

I got my Note 4 on release day and immediately set about trying to make a VR enclosure for it. I first used the box that originally came with my Note 2 using my DK1 lenses, cutting holes and using duct tape and foam board to position everything. The experience was shockingly good. I failed in making a strap system to attach it to my face for prolonged used.

At that point I ordered an oversized cardboard thinking it would be easier to modify. However, in my impatience I decided to gut my DK1 and use its shell to hold the Note.

DK1 gearvr mashup

My dremel tool is broken so I did all modifications with a very sharp paring knife and a drill for the cuts through the very thick material on the sides.

I popped the back piece off the DK1 and removed all electronics. I cut off all the little nubs and any piece that stuck up from the backplate. I began testing to see how well the phone would fit and suprisingly it was VERY close to perfect from the get-go.

The divider pushing so far forward was the biggest obstacle. I cut it down about 1/2 to 3/4" then built it back up with duct tape until perfect. If you look at picture #5 you will see I added a strip of duct tape the length of the back to give a bit of stickiness and added a nub about 1/4" tall at the same height as the old glue pads on the bottom(one of which I removed for the cut-out to control volume).

I then made cut-outs for the headphone jack, volume, and a very hard to do cutout on the right side of the actual goggles to reach the back button.

Impressions

Amazing. Ridiculously Amazing. I was pretty much set on getting the GearVR but now I will pre-order and be giddy waiting for it to show up. The screen on this damn phone is amazing. Watching 3d movies is amazing and 2d is not far behind. I have watched ~6 hours of SouthPark, 3 of the Harry Potter movies, the newest Thor, some 3d documentaries, and some other 3d movies that escape my memory right now.

By far the biggest downfall at this moment is drift and black crush/smearing. I predominantly use Cmoar Cinema and the drift in that, and most other apps, is insane. I am sure the GearVR will massively improve on this- but until then I simply use the lock-screen option in Cmoar.

As for the odd performance of dark colors- it can range from barely noticeable to extremely annoying. Very dark movies, like some of the Harry Potters and Thor the dark world it is very noticeable and immersion breaking to have the broken dark banding and black crush effects everywhere. I broke Thor up into 2 sittings because the effect was annoying as hell.

With all that said, I believe I have spent more time in this rigged together VR headset in 6 days than I did in 6 months of owning DK1. The experience is extremely enjoyable overall.

Future

I am currently struggling to get a streaming set-up where I can play desktop games using this as basically a flat screen. I have a very nice 5ghz router and have great luck with streaming over splashtop, limelight, and to a lesser degree Trinus Gyre. The wall I have run into is getting something like deskope or virtual desktop to create a side-by-side version of my desktop that can stream. Any ides would be greatly appreciated.

4k monitor, multiple HD monitors, or Oculus Rift? Which way should I go?

Current system is decent enough with room for growth. But I'm starting to feel jealous seeing multi-monitor setups, makes my little 22" feel puny.

My system is used for gaming, as well as homework. Currently working on an Accounting/Finance degree, so lots of Excel, so additional screen real estate would be nice.

So, looking into upgrade options. Got three possibilities...

• 2-3 decent-sized HD monitors


• 1 big-ass 4k monitor


• Oculus Rift (DK2 or wait for consumer version)

Recommendations? Other ideas I had not thought of?

Problems with new DK2

Hello, I have been using my dear old trusty DK1 for many months without any kind of trouble, but today I received my new DK2, and unfortunately I am only encountering problems, so if any of you could help me I would appreciate it...

The configuration ran fine and I measured my IPD just like I did with the old DK1. I launch the desk demo included in the config utility and everything works like a charm.

After that, I try to run a few Unity demos... and I only could make two of them run properly, while the rest end up in a white or black screen. I tried many things to make them work:

• Setting up the Rift's display mode to Extended and to Direct (while in Extended mode I rotated the rift's screen to landscape).


• Running the standard executables and the DirectToRift ones.


• I tried to run those executables as admin.


• I tried to run them with -adapter 1 (that's the Rift's)


• I tried also with -force-d3d11 or -force-d3d9


• I disabled the firewall (it seems that the Oculus service requires some network transfer)


• I tried to restart the service and the drivers with Bilago's Service Manager


• I tried to change my Rift's to primary display and to secondary


• I changed the USB ports used


• I changed the connector from HDMI to DVI using the adapter


• Tried to uninstall and reinstall the runtime (with and without the hmd and camera connected).

Almost none of this things worked, and in fact only two demos ran without problems (OceanRift and From Ashes). Oculus World demo, Titans of Space, and a couple of others didn't work.

After those failures at running demos, I tried two of my games: Elite Dangerous and Eurotruck Simulator 2. None of them worked.

In E:D I set up the Rift's display mode in extended mode, kept the service active and launched the game. In graphic options, the Rift didn't showed up. I tried to stop the service and restart the game to no avail. Changed the Rift's display mode to Direct to HMD, but no luck either. I thought that the service might have stopped, but I launched the config utility without problems and ran the desk demo prefectly, so the Rift was working. The problem is that E:D simply doesn't detect it.

Regarding ETS2, I added the "-oculus" option at launch, and the monitor showed up the warped image, but not in the DK2. Made the same tests as in E:D without success. Even tried with the Beta for Oculus and without.

My specs are Win 7 64bits, SDK 0.4.3, NVidia 760GTX.

Do you know what I am doing wrong? Why does it work perfectly in some Unity demos and not in others (I only downloaded versions compatible with DK2)? Why E:D doesn't detect the Rift?

Having A Horror Game Halloween Night. Need Suggestions.

So the majority of my friends all play games. We are having a medium sized Halloween night where we plan to hook the pc up to the living room tv and all play/watch/take turns on horror games. Any go-to games for this type of thing? We obviously don't want to get hung up on gameplay too much and we don't want to play a game that only gets scary 2-3 hours in.

So far my list includes Dread Out, Outlast, The Forest, The Evil Within, Alien Isolation, Alan Wake, Amnesia, Condemned, Five Nights At Freddys, Walking Dead, Pathologic, and The Void. Any of these games perfect ideas for this, any really bad choices, or anything I'm obviously missing? Interests seem to be leaning towards Outlast and Evil Within.

Note: One of us has an Oculus DK2, any games we can hook up to that? Or go to oculus games for this party?

Oculus DK2 Image jump and jitter

I've noticed recently an unfortunate visual issue with my DK2.

While playing elite dangerous (though not limited to that application) I am experiencing an image jump or jitter up and down, after 5 or so minuets of gameplay. This isn't caused by excessive movement while head tracking (though once it begins it persists during all gameplay) and even when I can assure myself I'm playing at 75hz and while keeping my head stationary (such as in deep space, staring directly forward) the image pops and bounces.

I have found a manageable level of playability in terms of Judder as I understand E:D doesn't have proper optimization for CPU usage yet.

There has been no distinct scenario that I have noticed in which it begins, and once it starts it remains.

The only solution I have yet discovered is to stop the program and restart.

How I run any demo:

DK2 in Extended mode

DK2 Set as primary monitor @ 75hz

All cores unparked

All in game graphics setting set to low/off

AA set to SSAA

Maximum Oculus Image Quality

 Set via Graphics Control Panel - Primary display disabled - Vsync Always On (Issue persists regardless of setting) - Tripple Buffering (Issue persists regardless of setting) 

My setup:

i7 3770 @ 3.4 ghz

R9 290x @ Catalyst 14.9

16 GB DDR3

2 TB Seagate SSHD

Windows 8.1

should i buy the gtx 970

My gtx 460 is dying and starts crashing in games.( i have tested and am sure its the gpu).

I am need for an upgrade, but not sure if should wait for amd to release their new cards. I would like to game with the cv1 when it comes out. Is the gtx 970 powerful enough for a decent experience or should i wait.

UE4 Cannot enter fullscreen/Oculus Rift mode

Hello /r/Oculus! I have had my DK2 for about 3 weeks now and most all demos/games run just fine. I cannot however test my own content in Unreal Engine 4. No matter what I do I can't seem to get the game view window into full-screen mode. Pressing Alt+Enter has no effect and I have tried the Fullscreen command and the result is the same. When pressing Alt+Enter or typing Fullscreen in the console, the output log displays this entry:

I'm running Unreal Engine 4.3.1

My computer specs are:

Windows 7 64bit

Gigabyte GTX 670 (Drivers 344.48)

i7 3770 @ 3.4ghz

16GB RAM

I'd appreciate any assistance offered if you have the time. Thanks in advance.

After looking through the output log, I've found some entries saying that the HMD is not detected, which is odd, because everything else I try works just fine.

Elite in direct mode?

Hi guys! So I've been trying to get Elite to work in Direct mode. I'm currently on a LAN party and i want to show off some games. Only problem is that games are only showing up on my regular monitor once I run the rift in direct mode. And the only games that support direct mode atm is demos.

So is there any way to get Elite to work in direct mode? I've heard that it works for some and for others not. Or is there a way to show the extended mode on the main monitor???

For anyone who is using VR with clients - Has it been effective in improving communication/understanding? Has it actually reduced change orders on any project? Do clients generally seem to find it valuable?
