Help me build a 2000$ Gaming Desktop!

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

• I will be using it mostly for streaming, gaming also for the Oculus Rift DK2

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

• $2000 USD

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

• I want to build it now but I am saving up my money for the desktop.

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

• I need everything in the tower except the OS.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

• I am in Spain, Valencia.

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

• Just the OS

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

• I would love to be doing overclocking down the line.

So Quake2VR is far and above the "best" VR experience for me - can someone help me understand why - so I know how to replicate it ?

As above. I have tried, I would be comfortable in saying,most of the different experiences that have been published on Oculus Share, for both DK1 and DK2 (having both of them). Some briefly, some for a while. I have also used VorpX and Vireio and Tridef pretty extensively (I know they're not as good as a native VR app, however I'm just putting it out there that I;ve been mucking round with the rift a lot over the last year or so). I have also made some very minor DK1 "levels" in Unreal to tool around in.

And across the vast majority of these experiences, I seem to have a recurring problem with VR - which is that for some reason, the scale is too small. Everything always feels too small. The scale is always off. And it makes the experience feel weird, and ruins immersion for me, let alone presence.

Now I don't know if this is something a lot of people experience or just a few, or just me (which is kind of what prompted me to post this), but I know the same thing has been mentioned here by others once or twice, and I have read about the issue of the IPD leading to "toyification" if it is incorrectly set (too big will make scale too small, if I understand correctly).

But this issue was starting to worry me a bit. At least, it was starting to worry me, until I recently tried Quake2VR.

Because something about the way Quake2VR is put together makes it not cause this problem for me - the scale in that is absolutely spot on for me - perfect - at default settings, but improved even further if i drop the IPD a bit. For the record an optometrist measured me at 63cm (32 + 31), so I'm pretty much average, apparently.

So although I am happy in the knowledge that there is clearly a way of doing VR on the rift that doesn't cause this problem, the question remains, what is it that Quake2VR is doing that most of these other experiences (even the high end ones like Elite:Dangerous and Half-Life 2) isn't doing, such that I can experience correct scale and really effective 3d when using it. Like, really, really effective 3d and proper scale (the enemies feel man-sized, not doll sized etc).

Is there anyone who can speak to this, because I am worried that unless i figure this out I am gonna be stuck in VR for ants ?

I Wrote the next testament to the bible

How Jesus saved america from communism: a lesson about quantum physics and interdimensional transit through the eyes of a reptile. Part I: Jesus Jesus Christ was born on July 29th, 3065 AD. He was an interdimensional traveler and future science guy, ex hippy, Jewish Rabbi, secret space alien in disguise and lead singer of the band Resurrection (who would later record their sexy hit single, "Crucify Me!"). One day, he traveled to a parallel universe in which he was born not in the future, but in the past. (0 BC to be specific). He decided he could start a religion in this timeline because why the hell not, so he started Christianity. His ultimate endgame was to create the religion so it could eventually lead humanity into a nuclear war. Then he would be able to act out his favorite movie, Mad Max! (as it later turned out, Mel Gibson was his evil clone). But one day, he would meet his greatest foe: the Easter bunny. (who was actually an employee of his real arch nemesis, Satan). Jesus's species, the Christaloids were arch nemesis with the evil Space Bunnys. One such space bunny had followed Jesus to earth. The Easter Bunny secretly planned to create candy so the Earth's population could get really fat off it, thus making them unfit to fight off their incoming invasion. The Bunny had also augmented himself with cyborg parts, thus becoming The Super Cyborg Easter Bunny! He could now shoot lasers out of his eyes, mounted ICBM nukes out of his shoulders, and a gatling gun out of his stomach. He could also shoot highly volatile eggs which would create sugary explosions that would give his victims a chocolate flavored death. He had decided to form an alliance with the Roman empire. When special agent spy Judas gave the Roman empire a report on Jesus' location, the Romans stormed his Passover Sedar and mounted a massive Trojan attack. Jesus pulled out a machine gun and decided to be a badass, as he shot down an entire army of Romans, screaming "Crucify this!" But then out walked the Easter Bunny. As his evil aura of evil filled the air, the Easter Bunny's eyes glowed bright red as he laughed a deep and evil laugh. The entire Roman army began to rise from the dead. The Easter Bunny's ultimate power was to raise dead beings from the afterlife back into the real world. Jesus tried to fight the zombie Trojans, but they proved overwhelming. He fought on and he fought hard as he filled the zombie army with lead...but the undead hordes of Romans proved to be to much. As the Super Cyborg Easter Bunny sat there, shooting lightning out of his hands and commanding the undead satanic legion of zombies, Jesus continued to fire. But nothing worked. No matter how many bullets the Roman Zombies took, they would keep going. The only way to kill a zombie is to shoot it in the head...and unfortunately Jesus didn't know that. So he was eventually overpowered and crucified at the cross. And as he sat there getting nailed into the wooden cross of doom, he summoned all of his psychic energy from his dad (who lived in a cloud and had a long flowing beard and was also the manager of every Jewish Deli in New York). With that, he was able to take the power of resurrection away from the Easter Bunny. He used it to rise from the dead as a zombie. Then he turned on his interdimensional time machine to go to the future. Zombie Jesus ended up in the year 1968. When he started inexplicably biting people, this caused them to rise from the dead, which would later become the source of George Romero's classic documentary, Night of The Living Dead. George later removed his zombie curse and Jesus was now back and better then ever. So he decided to time travel back to 1963. John F. Kennedy, a secret communist spy and pawn of satan, was currently president. He had created the cuban missile crisis as a hoax so nobody would know he was working with Fidel Castro all along. The ultimate plan was that he could later take over America and turn it into a communist dicktatorship in which he was in command. But Jesus wouldn't let that happen. So he assassinated Kennedy, thus saving America from Communism. His clone, Mel Gibson was later possessed by Satan, at which point Jesus went to Satan and gave him the middle finger. Disgusted by this rude gesture, Satan died and turned into a bat. He had reincarnated into Dracula. After giving him a wooden stake, Jesus kept on going. He had a mission: to save the world from all evil and run a religion. And so he did. The End.

DK2 a huge pain in the ass? (on OS X)

So I was ridiculously excited for my DK2 to arrive today and promptly read the manual, got the SDK and runtime and set everything up (on OS X), only to realize that even just running the demo that comes with the sdk is a nightmare of complication. I've read all sorts of threads, support posts, FAQ's etc, but still am not sure if it's just my experience, or if the DK2 is actually just infinitely worse than the DK1 in terms of actual usability and experience. The DK1 was practically plug and play compared to DK2, am I wrong?

Virtual Reality Roleplay

I'm interested in the ramifications Oculus will have on virtual roleplaying.

Sometimes I start up joint stories with people online on roleplay websites (and yes sometimes they're lewd in nature). I would definitely be up for roleplaying in VR when it comes around.

The first instance of this which comes to mind is Second Life, which I believe is already making moves towards being the go to place for this kind of virtual reality.

I'm curious as to what others make of this; will you be roleplaying? What would you want to roleplay? What kind of technology would be needed specifically for VR roleplays?

Unity Unite 2014 Survival Shooter Port

Haven't seen anybody port this over to the rift yet, so I gave it a go tonight. Mouse controls can be finicky, so I'm going to add some controller support when I have more time. It's really nice have an easy UI solution. I tried to move it somewhere in the world where it wouldn't block too much of the action.

Direct to rift settings/alignment?

Hi, just ran UE4 rollercoaster in direct to rift, no problem. Trying to run Crystal Rift in direct to rift, it opens, and displays but not correctly, I took my lenses out and it appears the left screen is all the way to the left and the right screen is halfway into the where the left lens views.

Is there any way I can align this correctly so I can view it properly and play the game?

Oculus and Valve still partners?

Hi guys,

TL;DR: Are Oculus and Valve still partners or have they become competitors? If they are competitors how do you see this pan out? Should Facebook outright buy Valve? Do you think it is possible for a company to become a VR platform without owning an OS, a 3D engine and popular games? What can Oculus offer that competes with Valve’s offer? If they are still partners what exactly does Oculus bring to the table?

Ever since Facebook acquired Oculus I have been wondering what this acquisition has done to the relationship that Oculus has with Valve. Facebook has said they are not a hardware company and are not looking to make a profit on the headsets themselves, but on software and other services like perhaps movies, sports and tourism. Oculus has said multiple times that initially they are going to target the hardcore gamers since they are basically the only ones who have systems that can run acceptable VR and game developers are the only ones who can offer VR content. Could it be a problem for Oculus if they have to compete with Valve for the money of the hardcore gamer? Most PC gamers already use Steam and Valve is actively integrating VR into Steam (I don’t exactly know the current status of SteamVR, but it seems to working and a decent experience, correct?). Valve also has an OS and a 3D engine, which to me seem like key components for a VR content company or VR platform holder. Valve also has popular IP’s like DOTA, Half-Life, Portal, etc. Wouldn’t lots of gamers flock to SteamVR instantly if Valve releases a VR version of these IP’s? We know that Valve is actively working on a VR version of DOTA where you can scale the game so you can stand in a lane or have the entire playing field layed out as a boardgame on a table. How could one resist that if you like VR and DOTA? I can only imagine how awesome Portal would be in VR. If gamers go to SteamVR then developers will likely want to have their games there as well.

What can Oculus offer that can compete with this? I don’t have a DK2, but of course I have read impressions and troubleshoots here on r/oculus and to me it seems that there are still problems even with Oculus’ own software. Even though Oculus has hired an army of amazing skillful people I don’t see them offering what Valve offers in 9-18 months when CV1 is supposed to be released. So if it turns out that Oculus and Valve are competitors then to me the best solution for Facebook seems to be to just buy Valve and its (in my opinion critical) assets, instead of trying to build them all yourself. This way you kill two birds with one stone: you gain critical components and simultaneously eliminate a dangerous competitor.

If they are still partners then what exactly is Oculus bringing to the table if they are not planning to be a hardware company? To me it looks like Valve basically has everything set up to offer a good VR platform (SteamVR, Source2 and Steam Machines) and is only waiting for some company to offer a headset and I’m guessing it won’t take too long before there are lots of hardware companies that offer them, with Sony and Samsung already invested and other companies likely following closely.

Internet or Real Life?

For those that don't know, there are many that feel the Internet can get the trash off the streets so the 'special people' can have places to do things without being around 'those people'.

So if you are put on some no fly list, for refusing to conform to some group being your masters, they put you in a financial situation where you can't afford to be around people, but they graciously leave some regulated part of the Internet as your current confinement.

I used the Internet when working as many of you do, however by wrongful action, and years of wrongful confinement by refusal to justly compensate for wrong actions done against me, they are touting there achievement of getting another honest person 'off the streets'. By me only having enough money for food, and posting into mirrored forums, since I know my posts are not being read by the lack of comment on the clearly accurate parts of the post that do not conform to there ideas of social control.

So while here, not doing anything, I figure a few wars, riots, fires and earthquakes, and a couple plagues can ravage those streets you think I should not be allowed to be on, and the societies you say I should not take part in.

So when you ask who wins, it is not about winning, it is about me being due money and that money has not been sent.

My wife hates Games and cumputer entertainment but...

I made her try the rift today and showed her titans of space and the chair demo knowing that it is a very relaxed experience. She was immediatly immersed and tried to grab the plant on the desk in the chair demo. She thought that it's really cool but added that it makes people look ridiculous.

The head tracking felt natural to her and she immediatly started to turn around and look at the sun (wow it's huge!).

Considering that she has a stong aversion towards gaming and the like this is pretty much the biggest praise the rift can get!

This showed me that the rift can be pleasant to anyone as long the content is right.

DK1 nostalgia

I just got an email that my DK2 is about to ship, after reading it I got hit with a gust of DK1 nostalgia, that time between hearing of Oculus, discovering Cymatic's videos, ordering DK1, stalking the forums and reddit obsessively, watching every 90's VR movie, reading Ready Player One, watching VR themed anime (SAO, Dennou Coil, etc), agonize over the shipping delay (I checked that giant online list every 5 mins!) :) Anyone else getting a similar feeling with DK2?

First Day of DK2 Troubleshooting (Solving Refresh Rate and Judder)

First, let me say the DK2 is amazing. I already posted my first impressions about a month ago when a friend let me try it. I just got my DK2 in yesterday, though, so I've spent all day getting everything working on my rig.

I have an AMD R9 290, so if you have that card, some of these fixes might work for you.

First, I can't get anything to work in Direct to HMD mode. Absolutely nothing. So I run everything in extended.

Next, many demos were not getting low persistence and clocking in at 60 FPS. My solution to that was to make the Rift my primary monitor. I also moved it to the left side, but I don't know if that changes anything.

After this problem was solved, I was receiving judder with a LOT of demos. For almost all of them, I was able to use Bilago's VR Game Manager to force graphics to OpenGL. This fixed my judder issues in most instances, but not all (still getting judder in VanguardV, for instance).

There are still some demos I can't get to run properly at all. My advice there is to check and see if there are any updates from the dev. In a few instances, that got it working (like the IPD issue in JanusVR). Also don't forget you can use Shift+Win+LeftArrow to move a window into the Rift.

Ideally Direct to HMD would work for all of these demos, but since apparently it doesn't work with AMD, if you have an AMD card, you'll most likely have to use all of these workarounds to get it working right. To summarize...

• Extended mode


• Rift as Primary


• Force OpenGL to solve judder


• Check for updates to demos


• Shift+Win+LeftArrow if it's opening on the wrong monitor

If anyone has any solutions to VanguardV judder or a way to get Direct to HMD to work on ANY of these, let me know! About nine hours of trying out all the demos I already had downloaded...time for sleep!

First of all, excuse any possible mistake in my English as it is not my native language. Secondly, excuse any formatting mistake as I am not too familiar with long posts on reddit.

I'm a student at the Università di Cagliari (www.unica.it), which is a relatively small uni in Sardinia, a relatively small island in Italy. I am telling you this information for you to understand how hard it is to find ANY possible solution for our problem that wouldn't involve me looking for help on here!

Basically this is what happened. We've had a DK1 for a very long time, we demo'd it to a lot of people here in Sardinia, both in an academic environment and in a "comics" convention, and to anyone who ever wanted to try it really. Now, since we've never had any problem with it, we decided to start a few projects using Unity to make use of our DK1: 2 games, developed by fresh students (1st year), and a pretty cool project developed by a 5th year student (last year here in Italy) that involves using VR and 360° videos, which not only is a cool project by its own, but it's his thesis! Everything was working great, and our game (I am one of the guys from the 1st year involved in one of the unity games), was going very well, which even prompted me to preorder a DK2, which I did on the 10th of August. Now comes the bad part of this story. Not only did mine and my project-mate's computers get stolen from our uni lab (unrelated but just guess how damn unlucky we are!), but a few days after this event the DK1's screen just stopped working! Sensors work fine, backlighting works fine, but absolutely NOTHING will appear on the screen. Pixels will stay black. We tried 4 different machines, different cables, both HDMI and DVI. We have no idea how to fix this problem, and this will be a MAJOR problem for our friend whose thesis has to be presented on the 19th of September.

I am posting this because I want to ask this amazing community, that I've been part of long before I could even touch the DK1 in here in the first place, for help. Any help! If you know how to fix the DK1, maybe it happened to you already and you know where to find another screen that won't take forever to ship, or you know of any other solution, please say so! We're really trying everything for him not to be forced to change his thesis so close to his presentation.

Also, if there is anyone reading this who has a DK1 / DK2 in Italy / Europe and is willing to lend it to us, we'd greatly appreciate it, I mean, it's for science!

3d video and the oculus

So i have my DK2 order in, and i am going on a trip to Disneyland in November and would like to take some 3d video using the GoPro sbs 3d kit. My question is; is the 3d video viewing experience like watching a 3d movie in the theater? would it be a waste of money to grab a second gopro and the 3d kit for it?

I know my experience may differ from others but it would be helpful to hear some others opinions who actually have seen some 3d video on the oculus.

Anyone got F1 2013 working with VorpX

Interested to hear what peoples experiences are with VorpX.

Until now I've used F1 2012, TriDef and OpenTrackIR which worked fairly well in the DK1 but of course there is no DK2 tridef support (and I'm guessing there wont be support anytime soon either).

What free cockpit flying demos for DK2 exist today?

Im currently looking for a good cockpit based flying demo that I can try for free that works well with DK2. If it is in space its even better. I know about Elite but Im not ready to spend 75$ on that yet. So what alternatives exist? The closest I have come so far was radial G (Very cool!) but you are not really flying there. Thanks guys!

Guide to watching 3D movies on the Rift?

Can anybody talk me thru the process of watching a 3D movie on the Rift?

I recently got my DK2 and am loving apps like Whirlygig and Riftmax Theatre, but I'd love to see the stereoscopic features of the Rift showcased. What do I need to be able to do this? Side by side? Stereoscopic overlayed? which of these apps will support it? I have some 3D Blu-rays but would be just as happy downloading some samples or trailers or other special 3D 'demo' footage...

Can anyone help?

Dragging DK2 content to Rift side of extended desktop is blurry/split in middle

So for example, if I start up Prepar3d (flight sim) and then drag it to the Rift part of the desktop the images do not line up...or if I start a video with VR player then drag it over and double click it for full screen the left half of the video is on the right and the right half is on the left...

What am I doing wrong?

DK2 on Ebay, why the big incredible price differences?

Browsing for a third DK2 on ebay, I noticed a huge price difference in the various auctions even though they end the same time. Have I missed something, or are people just plain stupid when bidding?

Oculus Rift DK2 at Dragon Con(take 2)!

Continuation of my earlier post(Link). I am going to be bringing my Oculus Rift DK2 to Dragon Con. Due to a change in my accommodations I will now be staying at the Westin(Host Hotel Woot Woot!). Would love to meet up with some VR enthusiast at Dragoncon! Now that I have figured out my schedule I have two time periods free for 2-3 hours of demoing. Either Thursday night after 6:00pm or early Friday afternoon from 2:00-5:00 pm. Is this a 'me' problem, or have you dealt with this?

I just got my Rift (DK2) in Friday and gotta say, it is pretty freaking awesome! The ability to see depth with CGI is really crazy (Titans of Space anyone?).

Anyways, I mainly picked up a rift so that I could play Prepar3d with it, since I always wanted to be a pilot growing up, but due to a degenerative retinal disease, can't (FAA doesn't like blind pilots for some reason). Something I've noticed is that I have issues converging the images at first unless I have a simple scene to look at first, such as the config tool demo scene, and then switch to something more without moving the rift.

So my current method is queue up what I want to run in an explorer window or know the key-shortcut to launch it (like WIN+9 for the 9th taskbar icon). I then open the config tool, run the demo scene, give my eyes all of the 2-3 seconds they need to focus on the coke can (maybe adjust the rift if it wont focus) and then I'm good. Once I can see the can, I just ALT-F4 and then ALT-TAB/Enter or w/e to execute the other app, and I can see it fine. It takes all of 3 seconds usually, but without doing this in a simple scene first, my eyes just don't converge the image, and I can't focus on anything; keep seeing a black line and the image is torn.

So that's my question, is this a problem that others have too, or is it a 'me' problem.
