I think Abrash knew, yet he (and others) jumped ship to Oculus. Why?

Ben Krasnow and Alan Yates are the two VR hardware masterminds at Valve. They worked with Jeri Ellsworth, but she went the projected AR route which is not optimal for VR. As she said, Valve is good at doing FPP experiences, so they chosed the VR project and said goodbye to her and her tech.

2013 - Ben Krasnow:

I still work at Valve. I'm developing advanced VR experiences.

January, 2014 - Michael Abrash:

It’s my opinion, based on Valve’s R&D, prototypes, and projections, that a consumer head-mounted display could be built to the following spec in 2015.

a great VR system at a consumer price in 2015 is more than just possible – it’s sitting there waiting to happen. And it will happen, if not in 2015, then soon after.

People were suprised by his pessimistic "2015 or soon after" date, because many believed that CV1 would be released in the late 2014 (including Oculus: [1], [2]).

2015 - Alan Yates:

Thank goodness I can finally stop keeping /that/ secret! I've wanted for so long to talk about the awesome VR stuff I do at Valve.

This opportunity for peaceful cooperation may never come again. But why, some say, why VR? Why choose this as our goal?

We choose VR. We choose to release VR in 2015 and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard!
