[Build Ready] - X99 MATX, i7 5820K, GTX 970 - Looking for advice, trying to buy today! For VR Development!

Hi!

I'm a junior software dev that will be mainly using this machine for development and not much leisure gaming. I'm very new to hardware, and this build was constructed by browsing this forum the past 4 or so days.

The purpose of this build is have a decent machine for Oculus Rift / VR development. From what I understand, an i5 4690k / GTX 970 is good enough for the DK2, but I am trying to future-proof my machine for the when the CV1 comes out ~Spring next year. When the CV1 comes out, I anticipate having to either pair my GTX 970 for SLI, or preferably upgrade to the latest single video card. And I will probably continue this dance when the next toy after that comes out :).

TBH, a lot of these parts were picked with ignorance. My build was heavily influenced by the suggested build in this post: http://ift.tt/1tlpQ1W.

Things I am not 100% sure about:

  • I chose an 850W PSU in anticipation that I might need to SLI in the future. However, I wonder if this is wasteful pre-planning. If the next generation of single video cards will be sufficient for the CV1, maybe I should get a lower watt PSU now. And only then only buy a higher watt PSU if I am forced to SLI in the future. What do you guys think? And if I buy a lower watt PSU for my single card set up, what should the wattage be?

  • How big are assets for 3D applications? Should I get a 1TB of hard disk storage? Most of the software development I do is not asset heavy, and I rarely exceed 120GB of total disk usage as I try my best not to hoard movies/pics, etc. But I don't want to underestimate the size of assets needed for a 3D game (which will be built in Unity) and their compile sizes.

  • Do you guys think my build will be cramped? I specifically chose a basic Zotac GTX 970 as I read it is one of the smaller GTX 970s and it is actually in stock. I am also concerned about the size of the NH-U14S CPU cooler, as I read it is quite large.

  • I noticed that PCPartPicker did not list the Corsair Air 240 as a compatible case for my build (I had to turn off the compatibility filter). Why is that? Is my mATX motherboard to big for it?

  • I almost forgot to buy thermal compound. Any other small things I may have overlooked?

This is my first time building a computer myself, so I am very nervous and want to make sure I checked all my bases!

Thank you all for your help! This subreddit has saved my ass!
