90's VR failed right? what if those popular VR books like Ready Player One or Snow Crash are wrong about VR too? do anyone considered this?

I mean the most central idea from those books is that the metaverse will be the place where all vr experience will be. I dont think so, I think experiences will be extremely fragmented, every big software company will have it's own "metaverse" not compatible with others "metaverses" from other companies. From the technological point of view and financial one too for me it has no sense that a metaverse described as those books did can take place. I think it would be a good idea that some good writer start to write a book about it but taking into account how things (technologically, politically and financially) work really in the present world, a world that 90's books said will have no oil by 2020 and we are seeing that will be not the truth :).
